Bouquets for different occasions

If we turn to history we are going to be assured that decorators from all times have perfected their art in creating beautiful compositions of cut flowers.

The word bouquet is of French origin. Besides arrangement of cut flowers it has another meaning – aroma.

With the constant changes of fashion through the centuries, the techniques and the forms of bouquets have also changed.

The first bouquets were made by people that loved flowers. They picked up flowers, tied them and held them in their hands. It is not until the beginning of the nineteenth century that can we speak of good arrangement of cut flowers in bouquets.

The first bouquets

The Biedermayer style bouquets, which were modern around 1850 were decorated with ribbons, lace and others. The form was concise, stiff and unnatural, but still they ment a progress in this art at that time. At the same time the luxurious Victoria and Pompadour style bouquets , with a semiccircle and flat form were spread in palaces around Europe.

After 1870, the so called Makart-bouquet appeared. It is named after Hans Makart, a famous Viennese painter. The flowers were loosely and freely arranged in this bouquet, and palm leaves , peacock feathers, dried and dyed grass were used for the back.

Bouquets for different occasions

Bouquets for anniversaries should be big and solemn. Appropriate flowers for such bouquets are Roses, Chrysanthemums, Carnations, Anthurium, Gladiolus.

The birthday bouquet of an adult should be arranged of long stemmed flowers, in soft shades (Gladiolus, Roses, Tulips). If accompanied by a gift, the bouquet should not be big.

For a child’s birthday the bouquet should be small in bright happy colors. You can add small toys and boxes of sweets.

Wedding bouquets could be made of Roses, Calla, Gerbera, Lily. They should be arranged with greenery of Asparagus, Adiantum, Nephrolepis and others. As a decoration you can attach tulle and ribbons. The choice of bouquet should be complied with the color of the wedding gown, the bride’s body figure and the setting in which the ceremony is executed. The small Biedermayer style or cascading bouquets are more appropriate for weddings then the big ones.

Bouquets for entering a new home, graduation, baby or other happy occasions should be made of colorful flowers.

If you are visiting an ill person the bouquet should not be big, but it should have lively colors.

Funeral and sympathy bouquets should be arranged of flowers with dark and grim colors – dark red Roses, Gladiolus, Chrysanthemums are appropriate.

How to give flowers

It is not necessary give big bouquet made of expensive flowers. The manifestation of respect is enough.

Flowers should be given with your left hand.

When a married couple visits another married couple, the flowers should be presented by the visiting husband to the housewife.

If the host has an anniversary the flowers are presented to his wife and he receives the gift.
